Yes ICANN: digital experts enjoy virtual tour of Hamburg – City showcase with live music finale

When the ICANN69 Annual General Meeting (which was to be held in Hamburg) became a virtual event as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hamburg Convention Bureau team wanted to find a way of introducing attendees to some of the excitement and energy they would have experienced at the host destination. A combination of a city tour, pub quiz and live music straight from the clubs on St. Pauli did just that.

David Patrician, a US journalist who has made Hamburg his home, presented a one-hour live show beginning with a city tour to famous locations such as renowned concert hall the Elbphilharmonie, the Miniaturwunderland and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Speicherstadt. The show continued at Aalhaus Bar, located in the party district of St Pauli, which hosted a technoogy-themed pub quiz and music performance by Hamburg’s singer songwriter and Beatles expert Stefanie Hempel.

Over 1,600 attendees from 157 countries attended ICANN69, from 13-15 and 19-22 October. The mission of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique, so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
