Life Science Nord

The Life Science Nord cluster was launched as a joint initiative by the federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. It aims to develop an internationally leading life sciences network within the region and to harness the potential of integrating the areas of business, science and politics. The cluster mainly focusses on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology. In Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, more than 500 companies and research institutions with 20,000 professionals are involved in these industries. In the realms of academia, these include five universities, three technical colleges, two university hospitals and more than 150 medical clinics. Other stakeholders include renowned research institutions such as the Max Planck Society and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz and the Leibniz Associations, as well as the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

Life Science Nord Management GmbH serves as the cluster’s operational centre, and both Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein are partners in this agency. As well as initiating pioneering projects and promoting innovative medicine, the agency coordinates the activities of the Life Science Nord e.V. Association, which serves as an umbrella organisation for 200 companies and research institutes from the region. The Life Science Nord cluster aims to facilitate collaborations between science and industry, with the aim of increasing value creation in the region. In addition, the cluster also focusses on advancing international networking activities.
