Germany's greenest city
Hamburg is Germany's greenest city. Almost 50% of the urban zone is dotted with parks, green spaces, waterways and forests. It therefore comes as no surprise that Hamburg actually has more trees than inhabitants. And this does not even include the more than 10,000 moorland sheep who call urban Hamburg their home as well. No coincidence then that Hamburg bears the title of Germany's greenest city. The important of sustainability and ecology is also clear in the city's politics. Besides the Hamburgisches Wattenmeer National Park, there are a great many nature reserves within the city limits. This has resulted in more than 8% of Hamburg's total area being declared as protected areas. Compared to the other federal states, this puts Hamburg clearly in the number-one slot.
