The many sides of the Elbe
The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and, with its extensive leisure and cultural activities, it is also one of the best-loved and most successful destinations among all of the German cities. Every year around 120 million tourists visit Hamburg - making an average of 340,000 every day. The international harbor has given Hamburg its nickname of “Gateway to the World”: for centuries, people from all the world's nations have come and gone, and this has served to establish a cosmopolitan outlook on life that has made its mark on this metropolis on the water.
Whether you choose a harbor tour, a walk to explore the historic Speicherstadt, a nighttime foray through the Reeperbahn or a Sunday morning at the Fish Market, there is something new to discover, experience and marvel at in Hamburg every day. In summer, there are countless open-air festivals while winter brings the magic of the wonderful Christmas markets to the city.
A visit to the unusually ornate Hamburg City Hall is also worth a visit: the imposing sandstone construction built in Neo-Renaissance style (from 1886 to 1897), dominates the city center. The City Hall is home to the Senate and Assembly, and, with 647 rooms, it has more apartments than London's Buckingham Palace.
