Maritime Hamburg – unique in Europe
In recent years, Hamburg Harbor has become more and more of an entertainment center for tourists. Mixing excitement and pleasure in equal measure, the launch skippers tell interesting stories about the harbor (that was established more than 800 years ago), and also about loose women and tough lads in Germany's most sinful district, the Reeperbahn. Landungsbrücken and the riverside all the way to Övelgönne with its many restaurants, and especially the historic Speicherstadt, are examples of the rapid development that has taken place in the recent years and give a taste of what else the harbor will have to offer in the future. For example, there is the HafenCity, which at 155 hectares (383 acres) is Europe's largest inner-city building project and features a mix of apartments, offices, businesses, restaurants and pleasure locales directly at the water's edge, as well as the new cruise liner terminal.
